paul gets up and uses his custom "winner selector" jquery code to "bedazzle" the audience. it was actually pretty funny, and people got a kick out of it. paul's pretty good at presenting.. i think he won the prize at last year's jquery conference for "first f-bomb dropped"

after the presentation, john wrote some game code using event delegation and the new jquery .delegate method. he pulled everyone's meetup avatars in and randomly displayed them at different sizes, scrolling across the screen

i was amused when all of a sudden, my face was there, scrolling across the screen, super-huge, as one of the bosses. now, keep in mind that this was after john publicly shamed me for having not yet finished the articles i'm working on about jquery custom and special events. random? suuure.

john took a few minutes to give the group an overview of jquery ui, also talking about some of the upcoming changes in jquery ui 1.8

john's presentation focused on "cool things in jquery you may not know about." some things were new, like .delegate.. some things were kinda new-ish, like event namespacing.. and some things were super old, like using .load to target specific selectors in ajax-loaded content.

afterwards, paul and i were talking about how amazed we were by the number of people who were genuinely excited to be hearing about the .load thing for the very first time, of course, we're poking around in the docs and source code every day.. but come on guys, that feature was introduced like three years ago!

john gets ready to address the crowd at the first jquery boston meetup, and it certainly was a crowd. well over a hundred people attended—which is somewhat ironic, as that's almost double the number that actually belonged to the jquery boston meetup group at the time—and it was standing room only.

fortunately, there was enough pizza and beer for everyone, so we didn't have any problems

before the boston jquery meetup, paul irish works feverishly (well, ok, more like sluggishly) to write the custom jquery that will pull all the attendees' names from multiple pages of the meetups site via ajax and randomly select a winner (free books!)

patrice rushen was kind enough to let me get a photo with her at scullers, after playing a simply incredible 90-minute set with buster williams' quartet.

i chatted with her after the show briefly, just enough to thank her for coming to boston and doing her thing.. it seems a little silly, but she is defnintely one of my musical heroes, so finally getting to see her play some jazz (and chatting with her) was a total thrill.

i've been a fan of patrice for many, many years.. so it was a real treat to finally get to hear her play some straight-ahead jazz at scullers. she blew us away with her playing, which was simply amazing!
